New romaine recall: 4 leafy greens you can serve instead

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is  warning us to throw out all the romaine lettuce we have stocked away in the fridge. So much for that lovely seasonal salad you had planned.

The latest recall was caused by a new E. coli outbreak that led the CDC to urge us not to eat romaine and to toss any lurking in the kitchen. At least 32 people in 11 states have gotten sick from this same strain of E. coli. The illnesses began in October and at least 13 people have been sent to the hospital. One person suffered from kidney failure, the CDC said. No deaths have been reported.

With romaine off the table, here are a few perfect alternatives for your holiday greens needs. And give thanks that you found out before you tucked in.

The trendy option: Kale

Some love it, some hate it, but you can’t deny it’s still one of the hippest super foods around. Throw in some quinoa and you win the wellness contest.

The savory choice: arugula

This green wins hands down in the nutty, flavorful category, which is perfect to stand out amid the lush palette of Thanksgiving flavors.

The high-iron pick: spinach

Dress up this dark leafy green with seasonal flair such as cranberries and walnuts for a picturesque salad course.

The classic option: butter lettuce

It’s hard to beat a neat little wedge for that traditional sensibility. Drizzle a few pomegranate gems over the top for the win.
